Frequently asked questions.
Can I interview you to find out how you work specifically to see if you are the counselor for me?
Absolutely! Contact me by calling me or filling out the Contact form below and we will set up a free consultation by phone, Facetime, Zoom or Skype. After our conversation we will both know better if our working together will get you the results you are seeking.
Where will we meet?
We will have our sessions either online (Zoom, Skype or FaceTime), or we will talk on the phone, whichever is most comfortable for you. In special circumstances we might meet in person at a private space on my property in Novato, CA.
What can I expect? What will happen during my counseling sessions?
There are many factors that determine how a counseling session will go – your particular goals, your situation, what kind of personal development work you have done in the past, how self-aware you are about what is really going on with you.
Basically speaking, we will be in a co-creative partnership designed to support you in feeling better soon, to resolve your difficulties as thoroughly as possible, to get free of the uncomfortable grip of the past and to be your “best self” much more often, in all aspects of your life. We will do this together by getting to the bottom of what is really going on with you and discovering what you really need to thrive.
I will give you recommendations to other resources – possibly to other therapists -- that will support you as you grow, heal your past wounds, clean up your addictive patterns and evolve. I may give you some homework so that you keep achieving your desired results at home or work.
My job is to have you feel safe in expressing your deepest feelings and desires, to be your guide in understanding yourself (and those close to you) better, to be your coach in figuring out what are the healthiest options for you at this stage of your life, to be your advocate in showing up in ways that will bring you great satisfaction and that others will applaud.
What are your hours?
I like to accommodate my client’s needs for timing as best I can. Depending on the day of the week, my daytime hours are usually somewhere between 10am and 5pm and in the evenings between 6 and 9 pm, west coast time.
I sometimes work Saturday mornings and Sunday afternoons. For my clients in other time zones or in other countries we make special arrangements that work with their schedules.
What are your fees?
I charge $225 for a session with an individual – my sessions are 90 minutes long usually. Overtime and phone calls are charged at $50 per twenty minutes. I always save extra time in case you need and want more time beyond the 90 minutes.
For couples, my sessions are always at least 2 hours long which is $300. Again, overtime or phone calls are charged at $50 per 20 minutes. I always save 2 ½ hours for a couples’ session in case they need the extra time.
Do you take insurance?
I don’t bill insurance directly. My clients pay me by PayPal immediately after the session or they send me a check. However, I can provide a superbill if the client has an insurer that will reimburse them for part of the fees or if they have a Health Savings Account (HSA).
What is your cancellation policy?
I respect the fact that my clients’ lives can change and they will need to reschedule their appointment. So far, I have not felt the need to charge people when they need to reschedule less than 48 hours in advance.
How do I set up an initial appointment?
Use the Contact form below to reach me so I can get in touch with you and answer any questions you have in a free interview. If you want, at that time we can schedule your first appointment.
How long will my counseling process last?
That depends on you and what you need now…and what you might need later. Some of my clients have felt good enough to move on after just six sessions; others have been working with me twice a month for many months and others call me whenever they need support to deal with various challenging circumstances or because they have chosen to do some deeper work on themselves. In other words, the counseling process varies for each individual, couple or family.
Can I be working therapeutically with someone else while seeing you?
Yes, of course you can. I will want to know what results that therapeutic work is producing so we can integrate that with the work you and I are doing.
